Seven Events:

  • In 1901, when Lily Casey Smith was born, Theodore Roosevelt became president of the US

  • In 1919, the Treaty of Versailles was signed, ending WW1

  • In 1932, when Rosemary was born, FDRo won the US presidential election

  • 1939 officially marks the end of the Great Depression

  • 1945 marks the end of WW2

  • In 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested after refusing to move from her seat on a city bus

  • In 1960, when Jeannette Walls was born, JFK won the US presidential election

Three Connections:

  • When Lily started school at Sisters of Loretto Academy of our Lady of the Light, the year was 1914. On June 28th, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated. This event was one of the main factors leading up to WW1.

  • The last year Lily had her first teaching job, in 1919, was the year WW1 ended. This relates to the book because Lily was released from her teaching duties, being told that the men who had fought in the war needed to be put first. Not only Lily but many other women who were working during the war were being removed as well.

  • In 1960, when Jeannette Walls was born, was the year John F. Kennedy won the U.S presidential election. He became the first catholic president

Three Laws:

  • In 1906, Upton Sinclair released the book The Jungle, releasing to the public the real-life horror stories that went on within the walls of slaughterhouses and meat factories. With these new realizations, the public pushed for something to be done. In response, the Federal Meat Inspection Act was passed, prohibiting “the sale of adulterated or misbranded livestock and derived products as food and ensured that livestock were slaughtered and processed under sanitary conditions.” (Britannica)

  • In 1935, the Social Security Act was created in order to provide money to those in need such as the elderly, unemployed, and/or retired. The Act was later expanded to the handicapped and other groups.

  • In 1964, the Civil Rights Act was created. This Act ban segregation in all public places and employment discrimination. It is thought by many to be the biggest achievement of the civil rights movement.
